The Protestant Reformation was driven by the conviction that the cause of salvation was the grace of God alone apart from any human merit. This grace is necessary because we are born into a fallen condition and incapable of being or doing anything that pleases God. But the beauty of grace is evident in the power it has over our collective sins, and in the infinite riches of Christ's merits that are freely offered to us.
